Andrew and I escaped to Madison for most of labor day weekend. Fall weather seemed to arrive just in time for the holiday weekend, with temps in the 50s on friday. A bit of a shock after the 70s earlier in the week!
Friday night we just bummed around downtown checking out the lake, the Memorial Union Terrace and ended up having dinner at Porta Bella's which is very close to where State Street Brats is located if you're familiar with the area. Nice italian restaurant, which my old college roomie Sarv worked at for a while during college. Nice joint, good food and quite atmosphere. We were both pretty tired so called it an early night shortly after dinner.
Saturday was action packed. We walked around the farmer's market that morning; haven't been to that in a LONG time. Lots of good food and beautiful flowers. Split a delicious cinnamon roll from Stella's bakery and picked up a couple honey bears. It ended up that our buddies the Pleva's (Bob and Melissa) were also in Madison for the weekend so we had lunch with them, along with Bob's brother and his wife and baby. There's a restaurant right on the capital square called "The Old Fashioned" which serves lots of Wisconsin originals (burgers, cheese curds, microbrew, etc). Think the restaurant has been there about a year or more, but this was our first time checking it out. Would definitely go back there!
That afternoon, we met up with my old buddie Jen who's a chiropractor out in DC. She was back in Wisco to visit some family so was fun to spend saturday night with her checking out the Taste of Madison (on capital square), watching the badger football vs. UNLV game on state street and eating some BW3 Hot Wings! For some reason this year I've finally started to be brave and try some spicy food...turns out I actually like it?! Who knew? The medium and spicy asian hot wings that Jen and I split were delicious! Andrew is not really a hot wing kind of guy so he stuck to the nachos (which also were very good)!
Sunday we ended up meeting my old roomie Sarv (and her boyfriend Andrew) for lunch. Checked out the Five Guys burger joint on State Street. I remember my younger brother eating saying he went to one of those for his birthday before; we have a few in the twin cities, but we'd never been to one. Turns out that is also a good burger joint! So, no shortage of good food for us over labor day weekend =) After lunch we walked around campus for a while before climbing into the car and heading home. Five+ hours later we pulled into our driveway. Had a fabulous weekend in Madison, but definitely glad to get back home.
